Hello everyone. Good to see the local pool league has reached the 21st century with the new website.
I might even get a mobile phone in 2008!
I was having a look last night and I have to say it's very good although I was disappointed to see that one of my pool highlights is missing from the Roll Of Honour. There seems to be a blank for last years speed pool winners so I can confirm now that as a member of the winning team it was Reds A that defended their title.
I first joined the league about four years ago when I was recommended by Dave Neary and Mick Pugh, two of the leading fudgers in Coventry that never quite made it into the Craffy squad. My first captain was Terry Buckley and we were lucky enough to win Division 1 in my first season at Suzy Q. Time for the big league!
2004/2005 was a sad season as I dispensed with the beloved 9 ball stick. It took a while to get over the loss.
Then in stepped new captain Steve Shelton and our Reds A team took 2nd in the 2005/6 season. Last season Roger Charles took over as captain and we went one better. Now I have always loved Cool Runnings and the team were inspired to an unexpected success when the rails fell off the German bob (Herr Premier Club) close to the finish.
I am now in my 5th season playing Monday night and this is my first year in the Wednesday league. I can honestly say that I am still really enjoying it and I am grateful to the opponents for bringing my game on. I have made some really good friends in that time and learned some valuable lessons (most recently from Mark White!).
Some other lessons I have learned:-
1) Wear trainers for speed pool and not shoes!
2) Try to avoid Martin Groves and Martin Kirby. Not because they are good players but because they are two of the smelliest!
3) There are only so many times you can use the family meal excuse for not turning up as Harvester's favourite son Dave Lane will tell you!
4) If you ever need help on a quiz machine ask Dean Davies. He's pretty clever when he is not annoying everyone!
5) International Rob Butterworth not only plays pool for England but can eat for England as well. I know why he is so good at pool though, he never went to school. Am I right?
6) Take less money to pool matches. If you ain't got it, you can't lend it!
7) Age is no barrier when it comes to pool. I look at the "Potting Pensioner" Roy Pontefract and think now there is an old man with so much left to offer!
My thanks to the committee for all of their hard work and I hope the league continues to get stronger in the future.
Let's see more players register on here as well. It will be good to exchange views and banter!!
Craig.
