Favourite Films

I don't want to put them in any kind of order but here's 20 of my favourites.

THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION - My favourite film ever. A tense and mysterious prison drama with Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman. Robbins plays Andy Dufresne, a hot shot banker who has been convicted of killing his wife whilst Freeman is “a man who knows how to get things” and likes “Andy from the start”. They quickly become friends but with Warden Norton watching their every move will they ever get out of Shawshank? Get busy watching!

BRAVEHEART - Mel Gibson is on top form on the battlefield as the Scots finally win one!! Superb battle scenes make this film a must watch despite it being 3 hours long. In my opinion it lives up to an epic with an excellent soundtrack to boot.

GLADIATOR - Russell Crowe is General Maximus Decimus Meridius in this modern remake of Ben Hur. Both he and Joaquin Phoenix are brilliant as Maximus tries to avenge the death of his family in the gladiatorial arena of the Colosseum. More blood spurting action from director Ridley Scott.

GLORY - Two of my favourite actors Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman star in this great film about the American Civil War. They are both members of the first all back regiment who don’t get the respect they feel they deserve. Eventually they volunteer to lead the assault on the impregnable Fort Wagner . A highly emotional film depicting the bravery and spirit of the black soldiers.

MEMENTO - I don’t think many know this one but if you haven’t seen it you should check it out. Written and directed by Christopher Nolan he shows great imagination with the way he tells his story. Guy Pearce is the star of the film and he plays a man with short term memory loss. He has to take pictures and tattoes his body to remind him that he is avenging the murder of his wife. This is a fascinating and intricate thriller that will have you gripped from the start.

PULP FICTION - I reckon everyone will have heard and/or seen this movie. Travolta and Jackson are contract killers whose stories are told in separate sequences throughout the film. Tarantino’s blockbuster is a must see film.

LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY - I’m not really a sci-fi fan but I really loved how Peter Jackson bought this famous book to the big screen. Yes the films are very long but the special effects are magnificent and the cast do a great job of bringing their characters to life during the adventure. There are three great soundtracks as well.

DUMB AND DUMBER - I was in stitches all the way through this movie as Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels play Lloyd and Harry, apparently two of the thickest people in America. They set out on a journey to return a briefcase to Mary Swanson who Lloyd has a bit of a crush on. Great comedy from the Farrelly brothers. No not Kev!

GOOD WILL HUNTING - The film that put Matt Damon on the map and I think one of his best. Both he and Robin Williams excel as the latter tries to channel the troubles Damon’s genius in the right direction.

HARDBALL - Keanu Reeves plays an addicted gambler that finds himself coaching a little league baseball team so that he can pay off his debts to the heavies that keep threatening him. A romantic comedy with a hard hitting story to go with it.
If you have not seen it, you should!

PRIMAL FEAR - Hot shot lawyer Richard Gere is a smug git who ends up defending the fragile Ed Norton, an altar boy charged with murdering an Archbishop. An intense thriller with twists and turns along the way.

AMERICAN HISTORY X - Ed Norton is absolutely superb in this excellent thriller. Can this extremely hostile racist mend his ways so that his younger brother who looks up to him doesn’t end up in the violent underworld of gangland killing?
SAVING PRIVATE RYAN - An epic war film from Spielberg which starts with the harrowing scenes of the Omaha beach landings. Great performances from Hanks and Damon as Hanks rallies his troops to try and track down Private Ryan whose three brothers have already been killed in the War.

A FEW GOOD MEN - Nicholson’s and Cruise’s egos go head to head in this terrific courtroom drama. Nicholson stands trial while Cruise attempts to find out how a marine was killed whilst being disciplined at training camp in Gauntanamo Bay.

THE ROCK - Sean Connery and Nicolas Cage team up to try and recapture nuclear rockets from a team of Marines on Alcatraz Island. High octane thriller from the director of Armageddon.

ARLINGTON ROAD - Not one of the big films but I was very impressed when renting this out on video (remember them?) a good few years ago. Jeff Bridges is very suspicious of his new neighbour played by Tim Robbins and has him under surveillance. At first he seems like a nice guy, but don’t be fooled!

THE USUAL SUSPECTS - Mysterious and clever thriller starring Kevin Spacey. I like films that keep you guessing and this doesn’t fail on that score.

THE NAKED GUN - Some cracking gags and comedy from Leslie Nielsen who is one of those blokes that will make you laugh just by looking at them. We all miss Frank Dreben although there is a bloke that collects the post at work that looks just like him!

THE DEPARTED - Nicholson and DiCaprio are magnificent and the rest of the cast aren’t bad either. DiCaprio plays an undercover cop that tries to infiltrate Nicholson’s gang. This tense thriller from director Martin Scorsese picked up the best film for 2006 at the Oscars.

SE7EN - Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman investigate the murders in the style of the seven deadly sins. Great crime thriller with Kevin Spacey playing the baddie.

THE COLOR OF MONEY. It's about a past it pool player who takes the new hotshot under his wing and teaches him how to play the game. I think it was based on Mick Adams and Liam Farrell.

Got to agree with you about Shawshank Redemption 9-Ball. I'd never heard of the film until one night when I went back to Mick The Sticks and he lent me the video - saying what a great film it was. I took it home and didn't watch it for a month or so, then when I did I thought it was superb. It had the power to keep you watching every minute, wondering what would happen next and what the outcome would be, and the ending was fantastic, I didn't see it coming. If you have never seen this film I recommend you buy it and view it, you will not be disappointed. Cheers Stick for putting me onto that one.

Other favs of mine:

Bad Boys: Not the Will Smith rubbish but an early Sean Penn film. Penn accidently kills a young boy in a car smash. The boys brother seeks revenge. Penn is jailed. While in jail he hears his enemy has raped his girlfriend. He breaks out of jail to go and see her. He is re-arrested and taken back to jail. Then his enemy is sent to the same jail. They eventually have it out man to man. Great film and Penns mate in jail is hilarious the way he stands up to the jail bullies.

Lock Up: Sylvester Stallone. I 1st saw this in Tenerife when I was 15. It hadn't been released at the cinema at the time so I thought I was dead cool when I went back to school telling my mates I'd seen it abroad. Stallone is the model prisoner who is a couple of months short of his release date when an old enemy played by Donald Sutherland comes back to haunt him. Sutherland is the governer and he wants Stallone to serve hard times and so makes life as awkward as he can. When Stallones bird is threatened he knows he must escape to save her, unfortunately he is caught trying to escape.

Goodfellas: Robert De Niro and host of other top names. I don't know if this film was meant to be funny or not but I found it hilarious. Joe Pesci is brilliant as the psychopathic mafia guy.

Silence Of The Lambs: Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. I went to see this at the cinema the night it was released. Some bloke came out of the cinema and said to me "I wouldn't bother mate it's a crap film" so I replied "yeah okay mate but I'll judge for myself thanks". I thought it was great. It helped that I fancied Jodie Foster at the time. Hopkins was brilliant as [s]Starsky[/s] Lecter, and his line at the end where he said "I'm having a friend for dinner" capped it off brilliantly. Talking of Starsk, he does a great impression of Buffalo Bill where he has the politicians daughter deep in the well. "It rubs the lotion on its skin and puts the lotion in the basket else it gets the hose again". If anyone has seen Starsks impression you'll know what I mean.

Very clever Deano and not a bad list to be fair. Shallow Grave? Believe me, I have thought about it. As have several others I would expect!!

I do like these films that provide the clues and it's up to the viewer to put the pieces of the puzzle together.

I have thought of a few more that could perhaps remind me of my good mate Deano.

Color Of Money - The English version called Daz Does His Dosh is much better!!!!! Ricky Jervais plays Deano.
On Top Of The Whale - One of my favourite foreign films. I think the title speaks for itself!
Crash - A very "thought provoking" film that could perhaps could describe Dean's pool.
King Kong - The story of a giant ape that goes around beating his chest trying to impress the girls causing mayhem and throwing things along the way. It is true that man is a descendant of the ape. I think Deano struggles to shake off those primitive tendencies!

Oh and one more thing. You know when I recommended you watch Big Momma's House? I didn't mean you should go in and nail it!!!!!!
