This is why any talk of England winning the world cup should cease to exist. We do not have the depth of players to cover for injuries, in fairness we don't have the players even if every English player was fully fit. Emile Heskey is a cart-horse who wants to think himself lucky he has ever been given a sniff of a cap, let alone won nearly 50. What it does prove is it doesn't matter how much money you give the manager, be it Sven, Mclaren or Capello, if you don't have the quality you cannot win major competitions.
For what it's worth I believe the F.A. should have broken the bank and made Wenger an offer he couldn't refuse and told him he has 20 years to totally rebuild the English coaching system from kids upwards. The problem we have is we don't have enough quality coming through, and until this is addressed things are only going to get worse. There is a paucity of quality English players as it is, so what will it be like 5 years down the line and then 10 ? The Dutch manage to keep producing quality players year in year out and we have probably 40million more people in our country. The reason they manage to continually bring through good technical players is because they concentrate on coaching the youngsters from a young age. They don't play kids on full size pitches as we do here and have parents screaming to lump it forward, they play on smaller pitches which means the players have to learn to control the ball and pass it. It's not rocket science but it would appear it is to the men in blazers at the F.A. who continually throw money at the branch rather than get to the root.
